DSLR 35MM Film Negative Scanner Rig

A rig for scanning 35mm film negatives using a DSLR camera. In my case a Canon 70D. The rig simplifies the scanning process and keeps the camera perpendicular and in position to scan the negatives even when changing frame to be scanned. The camera slides along the camera_plate using a standard arca swiss quick release plate. Print as many of the 50mm and 70mm distances you need to have the correct distance for your lens. For reference I used both a 50mm and 70mm for my 50mm prime lens with a 21mm extension tube mounted.

The back frame holder has a slightly larger opening for the negative frame to ensure the whole frame gets exposed. I have also made space for two soft fabric stickers on both the front and back holder to avoid scratching the negative.

Put simply you take a photo of the film negative while it is lit up and then post-process the photo to get the colors. This requires either a macro lens and/or a suitable regular lens and extension tubes. For anyone using a different camera you might have to create a custom frame holder, if the distance from bottom of camera to center of lens is different on your camera.
