CTC Prusa I3 (Anet A8) X-Axis Upgrade

Description

This is an upgrade to the X-Axis of the CTC Prusa I3 3D Printer (and all other similar I3 clones, like the Anet A8), designed to use an 2020 V-slot aluminium profile as guide, instead of the original steel rods. The aluminium guide, together with a decent extruder carriage (sliding on 3 plastic V type wheels), has proven to be much better than the original solution: less weight, less vibrations/noise, no alignment issues and, of course, it looks better!

The solution was tested with a 2020 (20x20mm section), 350mm long aluminum V-Slot profile (picture attached). Aside from this, you will need an X-carriage (having 3 or 4 V-type wheels), timing belt (2GT, 6mm wide), one pulley (I used a 20T GT2 aluminum pulley) and different length M3 screws and nuts.

For the carriage, I used an aluminium one, bought online, and made a separate custom adapter for it (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3758617), but any other type or shape of carriage can be used, as long as it is designed to roll on the 2020 profile.

PS. The parts were designed so one could still use them with the original steel rods, if needed (but this configuration was not yet physically tested).

PS2. I found out that for fastening the brass nut, using only 2 screws, in opposite positions, works better than using 4.
