Description
SummaryThis is a modification of the standard spool arm on the Lulzbot Mini. It replaces the hinge with a simple U Bracket, using the same mounting holes on the frame. The advantages are two-fold. First the hinged arm caused no end of trouble when moving the printer. It flops down at the worst possible times, and when in the folded position, it doesn't really sit inside the profile of the case, so it is easy to snag on things. But, most importantly, because the hinged mechanism crosses the plane of the case opening, it prevents us from easily putting an enclosure panel on that side. This modification simply removes the hinged portion from the bottom of the arm, and replaces the hinge on the frame with a U-bracket which securely holds the arm, and allows for it to be easily removed for transport. Finally, the new profile on the right side of the machine allows us to easily add an enclosure panel onto the printer. If you are interested in an entire add-on kit to enclose your Lulzbot Mini, Ive put together a kit that includes this thing and lasercut acrylic panels. You can check it out at: http://drazzticaction.com/products-page-2/3dprinters/ or http://www.ebay.com/itm/Add-on-Enclosure-for-Lulzbot-Mini-3D-Printer-/291446076488?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43db8a3448InstructionsThe OpenSCAD file for the arm simply cuts the bottom of the existing Arm (spool_mount_v1.2_Mini.STL) and rounds the end. This modification could also be done too the existing arm that ships with the machine, with a bandsaw, and a file (that is what I've done). Simply cut off the bottom inch of the arm and taper it smoothly to insert into the printed bracket. You will also need four 30mm long M3 machine screws to attach this to the side of your printer. You can use the existing mounting bracket that comes with the printer, and simply reverse it, so that the hinge slots are to the inside, as they won't be used. That is it, slide the arm into the bracket and voila! you have a nice secure, low profile, removable filament spool arm.
