As a true geek I am willing to trade this out as my wedding ring, but as a novice 3D printer who is about to purchase a 3D printer, is it possible to print metal on consumer printers?

im fully aware this comment was made 7-ish years ago but the ony way to make this out of metal would be to obtain a CNC machine, i dont think any consumer printer could melt steel or anything of that matter let alone cooling and forming it!

Hey mtnbiker my fellow geek It is not possible yet to print the ring in metal on a consumer 3D printer, unless you use other methods like lost wax casting but that can be quite tricky. You can print metal PLA mixtures, that have the polish and appearance of several metals but the general chemical properties of PLA (it's powdered metal mixed with PLA). However, unless you're fine with potentially reprinting if it were to be damaged or otherwise degraded, it's probably not a good target for permanent high-wear objects like a ring.
