Description

Hello! Here is my take at a Geometric Chess Set. (Please Read the Description)

Background - This is my first "appearance" oriented project and I must say, I'm rather happy with the results. This project was designed with 3d printing in mind (as I have recently acquired an Ender 3 v2) and I was really excited to put the machine to the test and let me tell you, it was quite the test. This project pushed my knowledge on design, printability, part stability, and material choice.

Disclaimer - While this project isn't a remix and was designed from the ground up, I did take inspiration from "Spiral Chess Set" by BigBadBison. You can find it at https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:470700 and I feel that he deserves some credit.

Important Printing Notes-- 

Scale- This project was designed for a 3inx3in square chess table. These pieces are HUGE and therefore it's important to scale them to your board. You can find this % via the following equation, (your dimension / 3) *100. This will spit out the scale you'll need for the slicer. A standard chess board has 2.25x2.25in squared and would need to be scaled at 75%. You have been warned :)

Layer height- I decided early on in the project that I would print at a super fine layer height (.12mm) for 2 reasons. 1- I plan on this set lasting for a while and while printing at that finer layer height feels like it takes forever, I feel it's worth it for the superior finished product on something that will last much longer. 2- This set was designed to print without support material and therefore has overhangs. No mater what, overhangs print much smoother at a finer layer height and as you scale the pieces down, it will become FUNDAMENTAL that you scale your layer height with it. I found .12mm(120 micron) worked great.

Support- No, just don't. Make sure to print at a finer layer height(^^^) for the best results on overhangs.

Orientation- Standing up like you would expect.

Material- I printed in ABS for that sweet acetone smooth (haven't gotten there yet) but PLA would be fine and you may like the gloss from PETG.
