Great low price first printer

I took about 24 hours to carefully build this printer and the quality turned out really good. This printer is not for everyone since you have to be pretty crafty.

You can do better.

I think building a Prusa (or any printer) from a kit is kind of like painting a bowl of fruit in art class; everyone should do it at least once, but the best returns on the investment is the learning experience. Put simply, mine was a cobbled mess, originally built six years earlier by a coworker in a hotel room over a period of about ten hours. For the next three months, we virtually rebuilt this thing from the ground up and replaced everything but the frame and the stepper motors. It was a real Ship of Theseus operation. What I learned may be ultimately invaluable, for better or for worse, but the printer itself is a financial rat hole. For what you'll spend, you can get a better printer that prints reliably out of the box (or after minor assembly). My advice with kits is don't spend a lot of money upfront, and don't spend more than half of that on upgrades and replacement bits as you go along.

Great printer and fun build for someone with a little more experience.

Great printer once ironed out. Offers many upgrade options and more initial knowledge results in much better prints. I've had nothing but a good experience right off the bat even though some have not. If you're not a fan of fiddling or learning before you try, another option may suit you better. Good luck and happy printing!

My first 3D printer

I was curious about 3d printing. So I bought a prusa mendel clone kit.  It was a cheap one to buy and I was happy constructing a 3D printer in three days and started to upgrade the parts of it. While upgrading I was able to change the printers parts with better ones even with my own designs!

My entry into the 3D printing world

I built this printer literally from scratch.  I received all of the printed parts in trade for some electronic work.  The extruder is a reaaalllly old makergear with the original hotend installed.  The electronics and wiring were all custom as well.  Lowes, and Fastenal were my best friends in this build.  Another local hardware store helped me sort out all of the small nuts and bolts.  I look a this printer as a great learning experience all around.  It was a frustrating joy to build.  I wouldn't recommend this to others as available kits, i3 clones, are far easier to deal with.
